INFORMATION ONLY
I HAVE NO TOTES FOR SALE AND THE IMAGE WAS TAKEN OFF CRAIGS LIST
If you are in the market for whatever reason for large containers such as the large 275 gallon totes on craigs list be careful.
These totes come in many different sizes and very very few in this area are food grade, most food grades are in locations that have a large food processing industry like the tri-cities or Yakima area.
If there is any signs of rust on any part of a totes metal frame, it has had reactive material such as oxidizers or corrosives in or around it.
If there is any residual material in the tote, that is not a good sign that it has been cleaned well. Most that contained petroleum products have residual very hard to get out. Ag totes are required to be triple rinsed.
Totes that contained herbicides pesticide's and fungicides, will have a defined odor to them very difficult to clean since it can permeate the plastic. Most ag totes in this area have had corrosives, fertilizer, 2-4D or glyphosate aka round up, paraquat, toradon and so on in them. Some will have a sticker or maybe a surfactant. 24D, glyphosate, toradon and paraquat cannot be removed from totes cheaply and should not be used for any type of potable water for human or animal water source of any kind or water storage for your garden, most ag products are corrosive/oxidizers. Stickers and surfactants, should be ok for garden water but do your home work.
Totes that are stained are not good at all no matter what the seller says. Washing totes out at your home and not knowing for sure what was in them can be harmful to your yard or property, so not a good idea. If there is an odor, especially a solvent odor that is not good!
Another not so good material transported in these totes locally is de-ice material that contain calcium chloride, magnesium chloride and sodium acetate some may even contain glycols, not good stuff for people animals or a garden.
Some totes may contain a bio degradable material these can more then likely be used for garden storage water and maybe even some other domestics uses again do your home work. Ask what was in it and get an SDS on line there should be little or no odor and no signs of corrosion.
In this area there are totes that contained bio degradable material and a lot of them were used for livestock or land management work like hydro seeding they should be good for domestic water application like your garden but probably not the best for drinking water.
Totes that are stained, not clean and/or contained a oxidizer, petroleum material, corrosive are worth about $45.00 - $50.00.
Totes that are triple rinsed clean with little odor and the seller can state what was in them and what the chemicals is and its hazards even if they are super rinsed out they are worth about $65.00 - $75.00.
If there is any residue of any kind in a tote best advice stay away from it unless you only want the cage to store something nasty in them like oil or paint or asphalt top coating and so on.
Food grade totes are identifiable and only purchase from the original purchaser like a food processor who can guarantee food grade, they are expensive around $100.00 to $125.00. If someone sells you a food grade tote and you use it for a domestic water source and you get sick, contact the Washington state department of ag, wa state department of health, State department of ecology, in Idaho be wary and good luck just go straight to a lawyer.
If the seller cannot explain to you what was in the tote and articulate in a very informative manner as to what the chemical was in it, stay away from them.
I might ad that there is not such thing as a re furbished, decontaminated clean tote to use for domestic potable water, triple rinsed does not really mean anything either. Triple rinsed I believe refers to EPA requirements as to used totes specifically ag which I need to be tripled rinse to be considered "Empty or rinsed out" not cleaned.
I hope this helps.
