Hello Neighbor Review: The Evil Next Door

Hello Neighbor is a cross-platform adventure game, telling a story of a little curious boy and his sinister neighbor. On seeing some piece of a terrible mystery the next door, your character tries to get in and see what’s there, but the house is well protected. Download Hello Neighbor for various devices to see if your intuition and logic help you in!

Graphics 4.5/5

On one hand, the visuals are as rough in detail as their backstory, one of those campfire stories made to scare, with little attention to realism. On the other, it does its job of creating a 3D environment for scary hide-and-seek and emphasizing the details that really matter. The house is mystical, the neighbor is terrifying, and the protagonist is of strange unidentified age, with slim arms and legs, vulnerable but brave. Anyway, we won’t see much of him, due to the first-person perspective; but the rest of the world is quite okay.

Gameplay 5/5

The events start when your protagonist, running past the neighbor’s house, suddenly hears the screams from the open window and then sees the owner beating something (or someone?), forcing the door closed, and crying. There is something sinister behind this scene, so you sneak in. But if that bulky neighbor catches you, the game is over. A spoiler: there is a mystery, and it’s worth your tries.

So you need to stay away from his eyes and cameras. Use all the items you find to unlock doors and uncover mysteries. When you hear the footsteps, hide under a bed or in a closet. Choose different ways each time: the AI the game uses learns from your mistakes and sets traps where you went last time.

As you progress, you learn more and more about how counter-logical the neighbor’s world is. Using items from your bag is anything but intuitive. So try the maddest combinations and actions to run into the correct solution. This irrational feel is one of the reasons the game is so loved.

Controls 5/5

Being cross-platform, the game is equally well optimized for touchscreen controls, gamepads, or keyboard and mouse (Nintendo Joy-Cons considered a bitter exception). It’s a first-person adventure. Like most games of this sort, it uses WASD for movement, mouse for the camera. 1-4 for accessing items you store, and, say, E for interactive. It is just as logical as the controls on a gamepad.

Replay Value 5/5

As the game gets less logical and more schizophrenic with each new room, hardly will you beat it with just your thoughts. Your intuition is great, but you may need to go against it and select the most bizarre combination (and it may turn out the right one). No wonder the game will require lots of attempts, though you may cheat and watch letsplays on YouTube. Creating fanart or writing fanfics, like many fans do, is also a sort of replay.

The Bottom Line

Hello Neighbor is a very individual game, with its naughty manners and philosophy, but it just spices it up. It has now an addon (Secter Neighbor, a collaboration-based game), and a prequel (Hide and Seek, telling the backstory of the moustache man with a shovel. It has a large creative community and millions of players, and watching them play is just as fun as playing Hello Neighbor yourself.

Yes, if you like horror and survival games and somehow missed this one, it still makes sense to download Hello Neighbor and experience the adventure yourself.

Pros : Expressive visuals;
Familiar controls;
Counter-intuitive solutions required;
Lots of space for your creativity.

Cons : It’s a horror game, so it may scare;
Visuals may seem too rough.
