Train Simulator 2019 Review: 10th Anniversary of Train Simulator

Train Simulator is a game series by Dovetail Games that provides a unique experience of driving various trains. The 2019 update brought new locations, new locomotives and more scenarios to play. Unlike other train simulators, this game provides fine PhysX engine models and tolerable graphics. Train Simulator downloading is available on Steam exclusively for Windows PC.

Graphics 3.5/5

It’s clear that Train Simulator is an indie project without AAA budgeting, but it could look much better. Developers from Dovetail Games decided to stick to the outdated PhysX engine. That’s why Train Simulator looks rather smooth and detailed, but old as granny’s cupboard. At the same time, no other train simulator provides such a high level of visual implementation. It’s also important to mention FPS problems in this Train Simulator review. The fact is that there are some scenarios like Soldier Summit – Salt Lake City where you can notice dramatic leaps of frame rate from 60 FPS to as low as 8 FPS in both 32-bit and 64-bit modes.

Gameplay 4.5/5

Train Simulator is the most exciting game in such a setting. The 2019 update includes all the locomotives and maps from the previous versions and some new ones. You can also create your own routes to make up new scenarios.

There are various types of missions in Train Simulator, such as cargo delivering and passenger transportation on intercity railways or subways. All objectives have different levels of difficulty and require a high level of attention from you. Real railway systems don’t pardon mistakes, as does Train Simulator. You have to be patient and keep the necessary speed, blow a horn only when there’s a reason for that. It’s impossible to switch on autopilot and simply watch the trains riding.

Controls 5/5

This game provides a wide range of control layouts. You are free to conduct acceleration and breaks with keyboard buttons or to turn on screen buttons to use your mouse only. You can also use any PC-compatible gamepad or an analog joystick.

Replay Value 4.5/5

Train Simulator is a game for train lovers only. It provides a huge world of railways and highly detailed and realistic locomotives, so outdated graphics are not really annoying. There are quite a lot of scenarios of different difficulty for you to test your patience. You can also get multiple DLCs to get more objectives, maps, and trains.

The Bottom Line

This is a very niche gaming experience for train geeks and enthusiasts. It provides hundreds of challenging sessions and a unique charm of conducting locomotives and creating new routes. It’s a game about the strictness of a railwaymen job. It doesn’t look very realistic, but the gameplay is right there.

Download Train Simulator 2019 to get the most realistic train conducting experience on the game market.
