How to Water Plants When You Are on Vacation (Even Just for the Weekend)

With the arrival of heat and good weather, who doesn’t want a few relaxing days? But if we decide to leave, what should we do with our plants? Today we give you some tips and solutions for watering plants when you are on vacation.

The need for water and light for each plant

First, let’s take a look at how often we water our plants. This will allow us to discard some of them already.

We divide those that require less water (if you will be out only a weekend, a light watering will be enough before leaving to not worry about it anymore) and those that we water every one or two days (if you will leave for a long period we advise you to think of a drip irrigation system)

Make sure that, in your absence, they receive the same light they receive when you are at home

This is an aspect we usually forget: by inertia we are used to closing the shutters and lowering the blinds. For some plants, the lack of light can be as harmful as the lack of water, even if it is a few days.

Irrigation systems to water your plants on the weekend

Fortunately, there are always new ways to automate irrigation based on various specific needs. And although a drip irrigation system may be useful in a garden or large terrace, it is not always possible to install it.

Gel for irrigation or thirst quench plants

This system works very well in small pots and will allow you to water the plants when you are on vacation. The irrigation gel is presented in packs or bags that we will have to open and put in contact with the ground. It is a mixture of water and cellulose with a gelatinous appearance, which will gradually “dissolve”, hydrating our plants.

To use it correctly, we recommend watering the plant abundantly, forming a small groove in the ground and not removing the gel from its packaging. It will be sufficient to remove the cap or cut the plastic with scissors. In this way, we will avoid product losses by evaporation.

Irrigation cones

Cones are a very interesting solution because they can also be used for several days of absence or as a permanent irrigation method for some types of plants.

They are made of plastic or ceramic and can work in two different ways:

Irrigation cones for plastic bottles

This type of irrigation cones fit perfectly on the neck of plastic bottles, which in turn function as a deposit. They have an elongated shape to be fixed vertically in the pot, some have a regulator that allows you to decide the daily water flow.

It is important to make sure that the full bottle can maintain vertical balance, to prevent it from falling and ceasing to function.

Irrigation cones in ceramic

This irrigation system relies on the porosity of the ceramic to provide hydration to the plants. Since ceramic cone exits a small tube that can be inserted in a bucket, a watering can (or even in the toilet water tank), providing water by capillarity.

If we choose this method, here are some suggestions for its correct functioning:

  • It is necessary to hydrate the ceramic cone beforehand. Simply dip it in water for at least 15 minutes.
  • Once fixed in the ground, it is recommended to fill the inside with water.
  • To finish installing it properly, we need to make sure that the pipe that connects it to the storage is full of water. The capillarity principle works only if the water flow is not interrupted.

With both methods, the cones work very well. They are ideal for those indoor or outdoor plants that need constant humidity. They can also be used with liquid fertilizer, to be mixed with water in the irrigation tank.

Irrigation kit with storage

Another option for watering plants when you are on vacation is the drip irrigation kits in which, instead of taking water from the tap, they take it from a deposit. They can be very useful if we can group plants in an area with access to a large water tank or near the bathroom.

They work in a similar way to drip irrigation: they have a programmer (through which we can define the periodicity and duration of irrigation) to which different pipes are connected that will bring water to our plants. The deposit must be slightly higher than the vessels because otherwise, it may stop working.

We conclude with a tip that we consider very important: test and try the chosen method before leaving. This way you can check how it works and if it needs some extra measures, such as a deposit with greater capacity.

We hope that with all these tips to water the plants when you are on vacation, on your return you can find them as beautiful as you left them.
