Lot's of projects going at the moment in eurosport. One project I have wanted to work on for a long time is gluing 45T 80 pitch spurs to 2mm axles.

I got the aluminum 4-40 screws, so last night I set to work by gluing some up. Here's the first step with the screw in the gear hole finger tightened to a very, very small flat spot on the axle. You'll see that these screws work really nicely for the finger tightening with the knurled end of the screw.....that's all I used to tighten it down. I used UHU epoxy....as I say, "No Boo-Hoo with UHU!" I have experienced Boo-Hoo with Loctite 638 and find it hard to work with. The UHU glue is a two part epoxy on steroids. I put small knurls on the axle where the gear will go, apply glue. Then apply glue inside the gear with a pin. Heat up the axle with a lighter and the glue gets clear and more watery. I then slip the gear on. I haven't had any failures.

Next I used Mr. Dremel to cut off the screw. Then I cleaned up the end of the screw for the next gear.

Slot Car Racer Today - Page 220 (4)

When Mr. Dremel was done, I got out the big heavy equipment and put the gear in the 3 jaw chuck. Commence the hub reduction!

Slot Car Racer Today - Page 220 (5)

And here is the hub with the turned down screw in the set screw hole....almost impossible to see it.

You can certainly just glue the gear to the axle and not plug up the hole, but I think this is just so much more fun to make, and in my mind has a big "cool factor".

  4. Guys:
We have one of the EMCO Compact 5 models w/ the overhead mill attachment, we use it for many things. You do not really know what you need it for till you need to do something. Turned down hubs are COOL, if for no other reason than"not everybody has them"

Excuse my french, but that is one BAD *** Track. It takes a special kind of guy to go to go to turn 8,14 times in a row put his car on then work on turn 9 till he gets that one right.

    Mic,

I have both the Unimat like George shows, and the Harbor Freight 7x10. The HF 7x10 dwarfs the little Unimat! IMHO, the HF is only OK. The tailstock on it is horrible. While the play in the ways can be adjusted out of it to some extent, it really has more than I like. The little Unimat is actually pretty good as far as the play in the ways and crossfeed are concerned.

As a side note: I also have an old Craftsman 109 lathe and a rebranded (by Emco) Prazi SD300 lathe. The Craftsman needs to be rebuilt and needs a new chuck. The Prazi is in a whole different class than the rest. This machine is VERY accurate with little to no play in the movements. It's only drawback is that the power feed only works in one direction based on the motor rotation (it is reversible).

The Prazi is the lathe I now use 99% of the time. The HF is second in line simply due to the size. I just make sure I'm not relying on the tailstock for anything when I work with it.

I bought the Unimat first. And while it does some things great, I wanted power feed. Since the power feed attachment for them is so expensive on EPay, I decided to get a new lathe. I found the Craftsman on Craigslist for what I figured was a good deal so picked it up. In hindsight I payed way too much for it and will be lucky to get my money back out of it when I sell it. Then one of our racers offered up the Emco (Prazi). It was too good a deal to pass up and I bought it. What a great lathe! Finally my son had a coworker who was selling the HF along with a micro mill for a good price. So I bought them. Now I have more machines than I need but I sure enjoy playing with them when I have time! Slot Car Racer Today - Page 220 (31)

Would love to have 1 going to check out a flea market I was told about in the spring. I just want something small like the unimat. But a milling attachment would be awesome also. No room for it right now but my 32 year old son is saying he's moving out . I can have my office back. then there will be enough room LOL.

Mike, the glue gears with the plugged up set screw hole is not a good idea for C Can racing because if you have to change the gear during the race, you will have to remove the motor because the motor angle is too steep to yank out the whole axle/gear/tire structure. That said, I am about to make up some Camen 45T 80 pitch spurs on 3/32" axle for a new Horky chassis I picked up somewhere. With eurosports, Mike, if you need a gear change all you do is remove the wheel opposite the gear side and yank out the axle, gear and tire all as one unit. The motor angle is so flat you can do that. Then you can slam a new axle/gear/tire set back in. A practiced tire changer can get it done losing perhaps 4 laps or so. On the other hand I really messed up on the tire change for Hermanator at the Nats last year during the Main. I think I grew 10 thumbs for that one.
